Digitally Sign E-Forms - Easily and Legally

Formatta's Digital Signing technology comprises a easy-to-use method and
system for signing legally binding electronic documents and forms.

The implementation of digital signature technology allows users to sign a portion of an eForm and route it to
other users for signing, continuing through completion of the business process. With Formatta Designer as
the authoring tool for eForms, there is no limit to the number of signatories on a form (except as dictated by
the form author). The entire form or just portions of the form are locked each time the form is signed.

The invention utilizes a combination of login identification and X.509 digital certificate technology to sign the
form by the signatory. The electronic document is then digitally signed using PKI technology by a server
computer and presented to the signatory on a local computer so that the signatory has an electronic receipt
of his/her authentication which can be presented to, recognized, and trusted by the person or authority
accepting the signed document.

This method and system eliminates the need for more costly public key infrastructure and X.509 digital
certificate issuance and revocation technology and techniques.

Formatta’s Signing technology for signing eForms on local computers allows for the following:

Organizations no longer need to distribute digital certificates to users, or rely on third party certificate
authorities to distribute certificates in order to effect digitally signed documents.

Organizations only need a single digital certificate which exists on the server.

Organizations can use their existing login ID/Password infrastructure and optional LDAP or other
connectivity for signing electronic documents and eForms even when these documents exist on a
local computer.

Organizations can easily revoke ID/Password credentials since this method and system utilizes their
existing technology infrastructure for IDs/Passwords. In this vein, organizations do not need to rely on
third party Certificate Revocation Lists nor having to support the costs associated with setting up and
maintaining a revocation infrastructure for X.509 digital certificates.

The security of this method and system is identical to that of an X.509 digital certificate infrastructure.
